Weekly Header Challenge -- Memories

It's time for the Weekly Header Challenge!

Theme ~ Memories

Chosen by Kathy.

Here is the image I used for this week’s theme:

Although this is a recent memory, I'm really holding on to it!  Here's the story, in photos and a few words of explanation...

Thomas applied for and was accepted into BMW's advanced technician training program!  We had only three weeks to get everything in order and get him down to Orlando, Florida where the training program is.

I pulled out two boxes of stuff we had used for camping a few times, and it was perfect for Thomas' new apartment where he'll be staying while attending the program.

Fernando led the way in the Suburban, and I rode while Thomas drove his car (a used BMW!!).

Other than the first hour, this is what the entire 12-hour drive looked like...

We stopped the first night in South Carolina to visit friends, who own five acres and chickens!

Tripod and remote shutter release, and here we all are...

Then it was on to Atlanta and more good friends, and another goofy photo...

Once we were in Orlando, and while Thomas was in orientation, Fernando and I visited Cocoa Beach.  We ended up swimming among all these pelicans, which were swooping and diving all around us.  It was amazing.

Thomas had me take an "official" photo of him (with my phone) that he could post on Facebook with his news.

As we drove off from his apartment, I took a photo with my phone.  At first, I was annoyed that I had also captured the reflection of my hand in the car window.  But then, it struck me that it looked like I was trying to hold on to him.  I love the symbolism of knowing that I got to experience almost 21 years with an amazing young man before having to let him go.

In the end, I love this last photo because I realize that I never really had hold of my son; he was meant to fly.  But I know that he's in God's hands--always has been, always will be.

Theme ~ Favorite Animal

Chosen by Tom.

When it comes to photography, I have lots of favorite animals.  They're usually ones I can get really good pictures of!  My favorite one this year is the praying mantis.  I accidentally watered this fierce little guy in my green beans late this summer.  Here's the full, uncropped image.

Here he is, with all the water droplets...

Besides the praying mantis, I love birds.  I captured this osprey in flight (and trying to catch a fish!) at Lake Bonaparte this summer!

Here's another osprey--or maybe the same one--with its catch, flying away.

I absolutely love loons, especially their haunting birdsong.

This red tailed hawk was in my backyard!  I love these birds.

I spotted this downy woodpecker tap-tap-tapping away in the dead tree on the other side of my back yard fence...

And, there's always dogs.  I love man's best friend!

Theme ~ Curves

Chosen by Lew.

I have time for a quick post for this week's Header Challenge...

To show off the most curves, here's the (slightly weird and unusual) image I chose for my header:

Making enchiladas in bulk.

Here are more curves, hopefully all easily spotted in each image.  :)

That's all I have time for this week.  The hearts of my fellow Headbangers and me go out to our dear Kathy this week, and we pray she feels our hugs and comfort from across the sea to across the country.

Theme ~ Small Critters

Chosen by All of Us.

I hope these critters are small enough to be classified as small critters!  Here is the image I used for my header.

And, here are the rest of the small critters I found in my image libraries this morning!

Birds on the walking path at The Arboretum.

Woodpecker on a tree.

The rear-end of a tobacco hornworm on my tomato plant.

Spider in its web.

Happy squirrel--from a past Headbanger post!

Mud-covered turtle sunning itself on a log.

Praying mantis on the brick of our house.

Cicada waving hello!

Unknown caterpillar crawling across the boat dock at the lake.

Common green bottle fly on a strawberry blossom.

Butterfly in the dirt of my veggie garden.

Hope you enjoyed the world of small critters!

Weekly Header Challenge -- Signs of Spring

It's time for the Weekly Header Challenge!

Theme ~ Signs of Spring

Chosen by Lew.

Hot off the press!  I took these SIGNS OF SPRING this afternoon.  I thought there might be some spring-y-ness at the Morton Arboretum, and a young lady friend of mine was up for a walk, so we spent an hour and a half freezing our fingers off together (47 degrees F on the thermometer, but a stiff wind made it feel frigid!), walking and snapping, snapping and walking, oohing and aahing over every little (or huge) sign that spring is on its way.

Brought to you, fresh and lovely and all things spring, first off is the image I used for my header.

Enjoy the rest of these, my featured images from a cold day's walk and a promise of warmth and color and spring!

Ground-growing scilla.

Downy woodpecker.

Red maple buds.

Two little pink magnolia trees were in bloom!  I had to shoot up into the sun, so I got creative with the images.

One small field of daffodils was making every effort to burst forth in yellow!

Crocuses peeking up through the leaves.

Red Japanese anemone popping up among some blue scilla.

White forsythia.

Fuzzy buds on the magnolia tree.

Finally, I leave you with these fitting images, of lenten roses, appropriate for this season before Easter Sunday.

It may not feel like it outside, but spring is here!
