Theme ~ Games

Chosen by Christine.  (That's me.)

I laughed when I looked at the theme for the week--who chose this theme, anyway?  It was me.  And I have no pictures to show for it.  Well, except for this game called baseball.  Friends invited us to see a Chicago White Sox game with them last month--what a blast!

Here's the photo I used for my header:

Sox win!  Sox win!

Here are the highlights from the evening.  Enjoy!

Fireworks show after the game!

One photo after the game, looking from the ramps at the stadium out toward the city.

It was a great game and a great day with friends!

Theme ~ Historic District

Chosen by Lew.

My home town doesn't have an historic district, so I turned to our neighboring town for inspiration.  I grew up in this town, and have had the opportunity (twice now) to tour the Moser Tower which houses the Millenium Carillon.  There is an observation area in the tower, and that is where I stood to take this panoramic photo of downtown Naperville, which dates to the 1800s.  Here is my header image, which I had already cropped:

Downtown Naperville cityscape, featuring the spire of Sts. Peter & Paul Church.

So, what might one see in an historic district?  My photos will show you...

One might see old brick buildings...

Building in downtown Chicago.

Or just plain old buildings...

Downtown Harrisville, NY (yes, the entire downtown).

Or even famous buildings...

Notre Dame, Paris, France.

One might see beautiful lights...

Old lighting in downtown Chicago.

Beautiful lamp on Ile St. Louis, Paris, France.

One might also see columns...

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

North Central College, Naperville, IL.

University of Illinois.

And, one might see ivy-covered walls...

Old building in downtown Naperville.

Finally, the interiors of buildings in an historic district will also delight the eye.  Here are a few pictures I took at a church called Notre Dame de Chicago.  My son Danny sang here with his university's choir last year, and he will be a featured singer in the university's chamber choir this coming Friday in this same location!

I love old buildings; they're full of history and I always wonder who the people were that walked the same floors as I, and what their stories are.

Theme ~ Reflections

Chosen by Lew.

After a scare with my computer--it sometimes refuses to recognize my external hard drive, so I thought I may have lost all my digital images--and about an hour of my time, I gained a few gray hairs and a few images to share with you here today.  I also became a world traveler for these images, from home in Chicago, to New York, and all the way to Paris.

Here is the full image from my header:

Cloud Gate, a.k.a. The Bean, Chicago, Illinois.

I left this image as I had edited it several years ago (2011).  The Bean is a great "reflector," isn't it?  Here's another very subtle image of The Bean:

Above, if you look closely, you can see the edge of The Bean.  I framed it with the tree in the foreground, and the concrete wall, so it looks like you're looking at the city skyline.  But, if you look at the buildings closely, they're a bit curved!  You're really looking at the city's reflection in The Bean.  Clever, huh?  *pats self on back*

One more stylized image from The Bean's reflection:

On to New York--not the city, but my favorite place on Earth:  Lake Bonaparte.  I photographed a 100-year celebration of one family's Lake home, when, toward the end of the event, I spotted the reflection of the Lake behind me in this gazing ball.  It was getting on toward sunset, too, hence the pinks and purples in the reflection.

Now I'm jetting across the Atlantic to Mac's side of the world, and Paris!  One of my classic favorites from our silver anniversary trip is this picture of Notre Dame across the Seine, with the lights reflecting a beautiful gold across the water.

On to the Eiffel Tower, with Fernando's and my reflections in the window as we waited for the elevator to take us to the top of the tower.

At the Grand Palais, I spotted this French flag and its reflection in the window.  I focused on the reflection, creating a bit of out-of-focus fuzz on the actual flag.

This is one of my favorite reflection photos.  We spotted this painter in a storefront studio, and my aim was to capture her at her art.  I ended up with an image that did that, but that also captured the reflections of buildings across the street, plus a whole lot to look at and let your eye wander over.

Thanks for traveling the world and reflecting on my images with me!

Theme ~ The Shape of Art

This week's theme could have gone several ways for me.  But, after fighting with my once-beloved editing software for two hours to upload images, I was happy to have anything at all this morning.  :/

I took the simplest route, opting for shapes--rectangles, squares, circles, triangles.  They can be found everywhere, in both nature and in man-made things.  Below is the full image from my header, with all its different shapes of buildings:

Downtown Chicago, at sunset on a September evening.

More squares and rectangles:

A triangle:

Circles:

Throw in some hearts:

And a star!  (Hey, it has five points.)

Almost forgot!  Here's one more rectangle, with some different shapes beyond:

Outside that door's window are our winter icicles, preventing a back-door escape!

On a spring photo session recon (scouting out a location), I started to notice all the shadows cast by some leafless trees.  This image below was my favorite.

I see the "V," but I also see, on the right, a pregnant ballerina dancing.  What do you see?

(Thanks for visiting today!!)

Weekly Header Challenge - From the Ground

Theme ~ From the Ground

When I read this week's theme, my first thought was, "I wonder when the first time was that I actually got down on the ground to take a picture?"  (You'll see that one below; it's not my header shot.)

Now, I'm typically a follow-the-rules girl, so you wouldn't normally find me lying down on the ground in the middle of a crowd of standing people.  But put a camera in my hands, and it's another story.

About my header:  After a rare trip downtown Chicago, someone had expressed surprise that we although had visited the Chicago Cultural Center, I had never really looked around.  Fernando and I had been there once to see the works of Vivian Maier (Chicago street photographer, undiscovered until after her death and pretty amazing).  But, we had never explored the building.  On this second trip back, along with Joseph and Danny, I made sure to put my explorer hat on.  We walked into Preston Bradley Hall, and my eyes naturally traveled up and up and up--the Tiffany Dome.  Here's the full photo, which does not at all do it justice.

For the above photo, I first looked around the hall.  A maintenance crew was cleaning up from an event, but motioned for us to walk around and view the amazing room.  With my lens at its widest, I couldn't quite capture the entire dome.  I looked around again, then got on the floor, fully, completely on my back, and really didn't care.  I shot straight up, keeping the hanging chandelier off-center so I could capture the center of the dome.  The below shot contains that chandelier (you can't even see the dome!) and one of the walls.  This building used to house the Chicago Public Library.

A trip down Memory Lane.  The first image I lay down in public for!  After our friends' daughter's wedding, in which they had carted in sand so she could walk barefoot down a "beach" aisle to the altar, I wanted to get a shot of that bridal path.  I was in a fancy dress, too!  Later, another friend commented that she had seen me and exclaimed to her son, "Oh my--someone's on the ground!"  Her son responded, "Oh, it's just Mrs. S."  (They had never seen me do that before, but maybe the camera was a good excuse!)

On a trip to Georgia, my little sister took me to a graveyard smack dab in the middle of a built-up strip mall area.  We wandered around, wondering at the stories behind the headstones.  The below one caught my eye, so down I sent for a good angle.

On the same trip, I shot a mother/daughter event, where I learned that one of the young daughters was so excited to wear heels for the first time!  I spotted her in the craft room, so I lay down on the floor and shot under the table.  I wasn't able to get the heel in the shot, but I heard her whisper, "Mom--I think she's taking a picture of my shoes!"

Concrete patios are not comfortable beds, but I'll lie down on one to get a shot of a happy insect.

On another Chicago trip, Fernando went fishing off one of the piers, and I brought my camera.  I got down low to capture some grass growing out of a crack in the concrete, with the city (and the Willis Tower) in the background.

One last image, from a trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.  I can't even remember what this is--the rocket booster?  Engine assembly?  I can't remember!  But I do remember I got on the ground in this Rocket Garden to get a good shot (shot wide open so no sun star).

Now I'm tired.  I think I'll go lie down.  ;)

Christine
